Best Resorts on Koh Mook, Thailand 2026: Emerald Cave & Trang Island

LuxStay Editorial Team·May 13, 2026·9 min read

Koh Mook is home to Thailand's most magical natural attraction — Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave), a hidden lagoon accessible only by swimming through an 80m dark tunnel. Our guide covers the top resorts, how to visit the cave at its best, and why Koh Mook is the Trang archipelago's most unique island.

Koh Mook: Home of Thailand's Emerald Cave

Koh Mook is a small island in the Trang archipelago — best known for Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave), one of Thailand's most extraordinary natural attractions. The cave is accessible only by swimming through an 80m dark tunnel at low tide, which opens into a hidden lagoon with a white sand beach surrounded by jungle cliffs and open sky. It's one of Southeast Asia's most magical natural experiences.

Beyond the cave, Koh Mook has a beautiful main beach (Hat Farang), a traditional Muslim fishing village, and a handful of boutique resorts. The island is quieter than Koh Lipe and more developed than Koh Ngai — a good middle ground for travelers who want natural beauty with reasonable facilities.

Tham Morakot (Emerald Cave)

The Emerald Cave is Koh Mook's defining attraction — a sea cave on the island's west coast accessible by swimming through an 80m tunnel at low tide. The tunnel is completely dark (bring a waterproof torch or use the guide's light) and requires swimming through chest-deep water. At the end, the tunnel opens into a hidden lagoon: a circular beach of white sand surrounded by 100m limestone cliffs, with a circle of sky above and jungle on the walls.

Practical details:

  • Access: Longtail boat from Hat Farang (15 minutes) then swim through the tunnel. Most resorts arrange tours.
  • Timing: Low tide only — the tunnel floods at high tide. Check tide tables before visiting.
  • Crowds: The cave gets crowded with tour boats 10am–3pm. Visit at 8–9am or late afternoon for the best experience.
  • Swimming ability: Basic swimming required — the tunnel is 80m but the water is calm.

Hat Farang Beach

Hat Farang (Farang Beach) is Koh Mook's main beach — a 1km arc of white sand with calm, clear water. The beach faces west, giving good sunset views. The snorkeling directly off the beach is moderate — better snorkeling is available on day trips to Koh Ngai and Koh Kradan.

Getting to Koh Mook

  • From Pak Meng pier: 45-minute speedboat. Pak Meng is 40km from Trang town.
  • From Koh Ngai: 30-minute longtail.
  • From Koh Lanta: 1.5-hour speedboat (seasonal).

Important : Koh Mook closes approximately May–October due to monsoon season.

Best Time to Visit

  • November–April: Dry season, calm seas, Emerald Cave accessible.
  • May–October: Monsoon season — island closed, cave inaccessible.
