Koh Tao Diving Guide 2026: Best Sites, Courses & What to Expect

LuxStay Editorial·April 6, 2026·8 min read

Complete guide to diving in Koh Tao — the Gulf of Thailand's top dive destination. Best dive sites, PADI courses, marine life, and the best time to dive.

Koh Tao is one of the world's most popular places to learn to dive. More PADI Open Water certifications are issued here than almost anywhere else on Earth — and for good reason. Warm, clear water, abundant marine life, and some of the most affordable dive courses in Asia make it the default choice for first-time divers across Southeast Asia.

Why Dive Koh Tao?

  • Affordable courses: PADI Open Water from ~3,000–4,500 THB (among the cheapest globally)
  • Warm water: 27–30°C year-round, no drysuit needed
  • Good visibility: 10–25m depending on season
  • Diverse marine life: Whale sharks, bull sharks, reef sharks, turtles, barracuda
  • Easy access: 2-hour ferry from Koh Samui or Chumphon

Best Dive Sites

Chumphon Pinnacle

Depth: 14–40m | Level: Advanced

Koh Tao's most famous dive site. Four granite pinnacles rising from the seafloor, covered in soft corals and sea fans. Strong currents bring pelagic species — whale sharks are regularly spotted here (January–April peak). Bull sharks and giant grouper are common. One of the Gulf of Thailand's best dives.

Sail Rock

Depth: 5–40m | Level: All levels

A limestone pinnacle rising 15m above the surface between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. A dramatic chimney (swim-through) runs through the rock. Whale shark sightings are frequent. Barracuda, trevally, and batfish school around the pinnacle. Considered by many to be the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand.

Southwest Pinnacle

Depth: 8–33m | Level: Intermediate

Multiple pinnacles with excellent soft coral coverage. Whale sharks are occasionally spotted. Leopard sharks rest on the sandy bottom. Good for both wide-angle and macro photography.

White Rock

Depth: 4–20m | Level: All levels

Koh Tao's most popular site for beginners and snorkellers. Two large granite boulders with good coral coverage. Turtles are almost guaranteed. Clownfish, moray eels, and lionfish are common. Excellent for night dives.

Shark Island

Depth: 5–25m | Level: All levels

Despite the name, sharks are not guaranteed — but the site offers excellent coral gardens, sea turtles, and colourful reef fish. Good for newly certified divers.

Marine Life Highlights

Whale sharks: Koh Tao is one of the most reliable places in Southeast Asia to see whale sharks. Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock are the top sites. Peak season: January–April, but sightings occur year-round.

Bull sharks: Chumphon Pinnacle hosts a resident bull shark population — unusual for a recreational dive site. Sightings are not guaranteed but regular.

Sea turtles: Green and hawksbill turtles are seen on almost every dive at White Rock and Shark Island.

Whale sharks at Sail Rock: Sail Rock has some of the highest whale shark encounter rates in the Gulf of Thailand.

Best Time to Dive Koh Tao

Best visibility: March–September

The Gulf of Thailand's dry season (February–September) brings the best visibility — 15–25m at top sites. March–May is the sweet spot: excellent visibility, warm water, and whale shark season.

Wet season (October–January): Visibility drops to 8–15m. Seas can be rough in October–November. Diving continues but conditions are less reliable.

Water temperature: 27–30°C year-round. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable for most divers.
