Best Luxury Resorts on Lombok, Indonesia 2026: Gili Islands & South Coast Beaches

LuxStay Editorial Team·May 13, 2026·11 min read

Lombok is Bali’s quieter neighbour, with The Oberoi’s beachfront, the pool villas of the Gili Islands, the unspoiled bay at Mawun and the volcanic summit of Mount Rinjani. This guide covers the top luxury resorts, compares the Gili Islands and explains why Lombok offers Bali’s beauty with lower prices and fewer crowds.

Lombok: Bali's Quieter Neighbour

Lombok is one of Indonesia’s most underrated islands. It is only 35km from Bali across the water but feels very different. Bali’s popular areas are known for crowds and traffic, while Lombok is quieter and less commercial. Its south coast beaches (Mawun, Selong Belanak, Kuta Lombok) are among the best in Indonesia, the Gili Islands offshore are excellent, and Mount Rinjani (3,726m) is one of Southeast Asia’s best treks.

Lombok’s luxury hotels have grown a lot. The Oberoi Lombok (a long-standing favourite), Jeeva Klui Resort and a growing number of boutique hotels on the south coast offer real quality. If you want somewhere close to Bali with fewer crowds and lower prices, Lombok is a good choice.

The Gili Islands: Lombok's Crown Jewel

The three Gili Islands, Trawangan, Meno and Air, are 35 minutes by speedboat from Lombok’s north-west coast. None of them allow motor vehicles, the snorkelling is excellent and you are almost certain to see sea turtles. Each island has its own character:

  • Gili Trawangan: the largest and most sociable, with beach bars, restaurants, nightlife and the best dive centres. Kokomo Resort has beachfront pool villas.
  • Gili Meno: the quietest and most romantic, with little development and very good snorkelling, ideal for honeymoons.
  • Gili Air: in between, with some nightlife, good snorkelling and a more local feel than Trawangan.

Lonely Planet’s Indonesia guide and other guidebooks regularly rate the Gilis among Southeast Asia’s top island destinations.

Lombok's South Coast Beaches

Lombok’s south coast has the island’s best beaches, a series of bays separated by headlands, each with white sand and turquoise water:

Mount Rinjani Trekking

Rinjani (3,726m) is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano and one of Southeast Asia’s best trekking destinations. The two-day trek to the crater rim passes through beautiful highland scenery to views of the crater lake, Segara Anak, at 2,000m. Reaching the summit at 3,726m usually takes a third day and is physically very demanding, so most trekkers do the two-day crater route.

Trekking agencies in Senggigi and Mataram arrange guided treks with porters for about $150 to $250 per person for two days, including equipment, food and a guide.

Best Time to Visit

  • May to October: dry season, with the best beach conditions and calm seas. Peak season is July and August.

  • Best time: June to September, the peak of the dry season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lombok cheaper than Bali?

Yes — significantly. Accommodation, food, transport, and activities are all meaningfully cheaper in Lombok than equivalent Bali experiences. A beachfront villa that costs $200/night in Seminyak might cost $80–$120 on Lombok’s south coast.

Is Lombok good for surfing?

Yes — Lombok’s south coast (Kuta, Selong Belanak, Gerupuk) has excellent surf for all levels. Selong Belanak is good for beginners (gentle waves), while Desert Point (northwest coast) is one of Indonesia’s most famous advanced surf breaks.

How do I get from Bali to the Gili Islands?

Fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan (Bali) to Gili Trawangan — 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the operator. Multiple daily departures. Book in advance during peak season (July–August).
