Beyond Nagoya: Takayama, Shirakawa-go & a More Unhurried Journey

Historic streets. Thatched rooftops. Time to enjoy the journey between them.

Plan my Nagoya & Shirakawa-go journey

Start in Nagoya, then consider giving central Japan more than a passing glance. Takayama’s historic streets and Shirakawa-go’s steep-roofed houses invite a journey with time on foot, time for lunch and a thoughtful place to stay.

Our recommendation is to compare a focused day trip with an overnight escape before booking. The right choice depends on your starting hotel, priorities and how much time you are comfortable spending on the road.

Give Takayama time on foot

Make the town a destination, not simply a transfer stop. Choose a walk through its historic streets and leave room for a meal. Ask your operator where the car can meet you again, so you can explore without repeatedly returning to the same place.

If you stay overnight, arrange the next day around your accommodation’s check-out and luggage arrangements. Confirm whether the same vehicle and driver are included across multiple days.

Visit Shirakawa-go thoughtfully

Shirakawa-go’s Ogimachi village is known for its gassho-zukuri houses. Give yourself time to appreciate the setting, follow local signs and respect private homes and residents.

A car journey does not mean driving up to every house. Confirm the designated arrival and parking arrangements, then allow for walking. Any house visits or other paid attractions should be checked and budgeted separately.

Choose your pace before your stops

Shirakawa-go has no railway station; road transport forms part of access. A private car is one option, while scheduled buses are another. Compare them against your hotel locations, luggage and preferred schedule.

For a winter trip, ask the operator to review the route for your exact dates and conditions. Snow scenes are seasonal, and special events or access arrangements should never be assumed to be included.

Share your preferred overnight towns and must-see places through our Japan private car enquiry. Continuing to Kansai? Our Kyoto and Nara guide offers another way to keep the rest of your holiday unhurried.
