Kyushu at Your Pace: Yufuin, Beppu & a Stay Worth Slowing Down For
A town to wander. A bath to linger in. A journey built around your stay.
Plan my Kyushu journeyThe most rewarding Kyushu itinerary may be the one with fewer stops. Make a hot-spring stay the centre of your trip, then choose the journeys around it: an easy town walk, a leisurely lunch and enough time to settle in before dinner.
Yufuin and Beppu, both in Oita Prefecture, offer two different starting points for an onsen-focused escape. This guide suggests how to pace your visit; your operator will need to confirm the route and service hours.
Let Yufuin set the pace
Yufuin sits at the foot of Mount Yufu. Use the town as the focus of an outing rather than one more stop on a long cross-island drive. Choose a walk, a meal and time at your accommodation, leaving additional stops optional.
If a ryokan stay is the reason for travelling, work backwards from its check-in and dinner arrangements. Ask the property what is included in your room plan, whether private bathing is available and which reservations need to be made ahead.
Give Beppu a separate chapter
Beppu is another established hot-spring destination. Consider spending a separate day here instead of squeezing both towns into a tightly timed sightseeing circuit.
Tell your operator whether your priority is a bathing experience, town exploration or simply a comfortable hotel transfer. Admission, opening times and any bathing restrictions should be checked with the specific facility you choose.
Start with your hotels, then plan the drive
Arriving through Fukuoka? Share your arrival time and the exact hotel addresses before requesting a quote. A transfer day and a sightseeing day have different requirements; ask how your preferred stops affect the total driving time.
For a group, list passengers, suitcase sizes and any child-seat needs. Keep your wish list short enough to leave room for meals, comfort breaks and the stay itself.
